Flight Training under the GI Bill:
Phoenix East Aviation’s
professional flight training program has been approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for reimbursement under the Montgomery GI bill, for veterans eligible for GI Bill educational benefits. To qualify for these benefits, the veteran must have a private pilot’s license and valid medical certification before beginning a reimbursable pilot training program. Under Chapter 30 of the Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB), the VA will reimburse the enrolled veteran up to 60% of the approved training charges up to the maximum allowable. Special Phoenix Grants for Veterans
In addition to this VA reimbursement, Phoenix East offers two Patriot Grants for U.S. military veterans who are eligible for GI Bill educational benefits. The new Phoenix East Aviation grant, called the Patriot Institutional Grant Bravo, follows the initial Patriot Grant Alpha. Both grants are currently available for Phoenix East students; they are designed to financially assist the veteran and express appreciation to veterans training to be professional pilots. The new Phoenix East Aviation Patriot Grant Bravo can reduce training costs by up to $3,000 overall. The Alpha Grant will contribute $1,500 toward the training tuition.
The Phoenix East Aviation Patriot Grant Bravo awards a segment of the grant as each phase of pilot training is successfully completed, up to the total of $3,000 ($1,000 for Private Pilot License, $1,000 for Instrument Rating, and $1,000 for Commercial Multi-Engine Rating). It is available for students enrolling in the Basic with Multi-Engine Professional Course and is especially attractive for students who do not yet have a
Private Pilot License. The Phoenix East Patriot Grant Alpha is designed to contribute approximately 5% toward training tuition for a
Multi-Engine Commercial/Instrument Course. These special grants will further reduce the veteran’s career pilot training costs.

The flight training student is responsible for all training costs incurred. To be certain, you may obtain a VA Certificate of Eligibility, which will detail your available benefits. 
Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB), also known as Chapter 30:
This educational benefit may be used for flight training. The VA reimbursement is typically approximately 60% and can be used for training following receipt of a
Private Pilot Certificate. However, you may also be eligible to receive a Phoenix East Aviation Patriot Grant, which will supplement your GI Bill reimbursement. Phoenix East also offers assistance with financing options for the veteran. MGIB benefits may be used for up to 10 years from the date of last discharge or release from active duty. (The 10 year period can be extended under special circumstances. Contact the VA for details). Eligible veterans, based on two years of active duty and four years in the Selected Reserve, have 10 years from active duty release date, or 10 years from the completion of the four-year Selected Reserve obligation to use MGIB benefits. VA benefits do not reimburse costs for Private Pilot Certificate training. To qualify for these GI benefits, the veteran must have a
private pilot’s license and valid medical certification before beginning a reimbursable pilot training program. (Note: Veterans training at Phoenix East Aviation under the MGIB are eligible for a Patriot Grant Bravo, which includes a Private Pilot Certificate award).
POST 9/11 VETERANS EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE IMPROVEMENT ACT OF 2010: On January 4, 2011, President Obama signed into law the Senate Bill (S-3447), “Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvement Act of 2010.” A brief summary of this new law’s impact on flight training benefits is outlined below. Effective now. Payable beginning October 1, 2011: Expands the Post-9/11 GI Bill to include Active Service performed by National Guard members under Title 32 U.S.C. for the purpose of organizing, administering, recruiting, instructing, or training the National Guard; or under section 502(f) for the purpose of responding to a national emergency.
Effective October 1, 2011: Allows students to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill for non-college degree programs such as flight training (for other than a Private Pilot License) at flight schools such as Phoenix East Aviation. Flight programs: The new bill pays the lesser of actual net costs for in-state tuition and fees assessed by the school or $10,000, whichever is less per academic year.
