How it works in the U.S. is most interesting, especially if you are not yet a pilot, but want to be. You may have seen "the tower" at airports. The men and women controllers who work there control air traffic within just a few miles of the airport. This is typically called the "terminal air space." The Health of the Airline Industry and Load Factors

First of all, you may ask "What's a load factor?" The airlines will tell you it's the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers, or to put it more simply, for all the scheduled flights, the percentage of seats that are sold on a particular airline. This is important to the health of that airline -- and the industry as a whole. Stereotypes about Airline Pilots

A stereotype about airline pilots persists -- that they are male, trained by the military, are trim and fit, have perfect vision, and are excellent at mathematics. The Wright Brothers Had Only Three Instrument Gauges

Pilots use instrument gauges to help them fly and reach their destination safely. The fathers of flight, Orville and Wilbur Wright, had only three "gauges" to help them: a stopwatch, an anemometer to measure wind speed and a tachometer. Of course, they didn't go very high or very fast during these first days of flight. With the introduction of instrument flight, nearly every inch of cockpit space became covered with instruments, switches and buttons to help the pilot. And as ...

In general, commercial airlines use about 66 percent of the resources of federal air traffic control and pay about 96 percent of the costs. Supersonic Flight -- 60 Years Ago

Supersonic flight has come a long way since the first manned flight broke the sound barrier 60 years ago. That was in 1947, and it happened in California, over the Mojave Desert. Charles Chuck Yeager was his name. He flew in an experimental aircraft, the Bell XS-1 and reach Mach 1.06. The reaction of the world was phenomenal when...

U.S. Carriers Expanding Service

I like to see U.S. commercial aviation becoming more aggressive, growing and expanding -- it's good for the industry -- and of course good for all of us who are involved in it or want to be professionally involved in it. Good example: AMERICAN EAGLE just added new daily non-stop service to 11 U.S. cities: Charlotte, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Norfolk, Pittsburg and Richmond. American Eagle has just added weekend jet service between Miami and Cincinnati. In...

"I have worked at TAAG Angola Airlines for four years now. I left PEA, and I got straight into the classic B737-200, by passing all the exams. After a year-and-a-half, Iwas promoted as a B737-700 First Officer, which I flew for another year-and-a-half. At the moment I have been flying around the world in the brand new B777-300 and the B777-200 as well.

I owe a big thanks to the PEA team for taking me this far, without all that 'hard' training, I wouldn't have passed those tests that easily. Therefore, I wouldn't have gotten this far. THANK YOU PHOENIX EAST."
