Beijing Wants to Be World’s Busiest Airport
China has plans to make Beijing the world’s busiest airport. Part of a huge expansion of China’s airline industry, the new airport is expected to have as many as nine runways, according to the U.K. newspaper, The Guardian. The mega-project is planned for the rural district of Daxing, about 31 miles from downtown Beijing. As a comparison, Denver Colorado international airport has six runways, which is the most of any airport in the world.
Development for this third Beijing airport could mean as many as 120 million passengers passing through Beijing’s airports each year, estimates indicate. This would overtake London as the world’s busiest aviation hub.
It was just four years ago that the existing international airport opened an immense third terminal, which was completed for the Beijing Olympics. At that time it was the world’s biggest airport building, with more terminal space than all five of London’s Heathrow Airport terminals combined. Last year, this Beijing airport handled nearly 74 million passengers. This number is expected to incrase to 90 million a year within the next four years, which is more than it was designed to handle. Hence, the impetus for the development of the new airport outside of Beijing in Daxing.
