After a few years of low-levels of pilot hiring, the airline industry is at the beginning of what's expected to be the biggest surge in pilot hiring in history, according to Boeing Aircraft. The number of commercial pilots needed worldwide in the next 18 years is nearly 467,000. This is an average of 23,300 new pilots that must be hired each year. In North America, 97,000 pilots will be needed. And nearly 200,000 pilots are expected to be hired in the Asia-Pacific region.
This is expected to be the longest AND largest pilot hiring boom in the history of commercial aviation. The demand for pilots will be so great that some analysts predict a possible shortage of pilots. What happens then is a fierce competition among airlines around the world vying for pilots -- and quite likely offering higher and higher salaries to meet their needs.
Sharry Carbary, Vice President, Boeing Commercial Airplanes says "it's a global marketplace for pilots, and we'll not have enough if that growth trend continues over the next few years."
What is causing this great need for new pilots? The rapid growth of travel in Asia, plus a looming wave of pilot retirements in the U.S. , and increasing demand for air travel within the U.S. as the economy continues to improve.
